BCBS Reinstates St Lukes Network Agreements without Contract Lapse

BCBS and CommonSpirit Health reached an agreement to reinstate CommonSpirit’s network agreements with no lapse in network participation. CommonSpirit is the parent company of CHI St Luke’s and CHI St Joseph hospitals and other regional hospitals through Houston and East Texas.

CommonSpirit previously terminated their network contracts with BCBS effective Dec 17, 2020 in an attempt to renegotiate their reimbursement rates and also raise money for a new bone marrow transplant unit. BCBS provided details about the termination in their producer newsletter on Oct 14, 2020. St Luke’s was, arguably, the cornerstone of the Blue Advantage HMO network in the Houston market. 1/3rd of Houston-area small groups offer a plan using the network and the vast majority of individual customers have plans that use the network.

All hospitals were reinstated in all networks immediately except for the St Joseph hospitals, which will remain out of the Blue Advantage HMO network temporarily. The networks include:

  • Blue Choice PPO (all segments)
  • Blue Advantage HMO (small group, individual)
  • MyBlue Health (individual)
  • Blue Essentials (mid-market, large group)
  • Blue Premier (mid-market, large group)
